Healthy Bibbiddi Bobbiddi Boos…..

We at Room 1 know that being healthy is very important to our well being. But what does healthy actually mean? Let’s look at the following image. How do you think the children in this photo feel? Why?

Here are some great brainstorming ideas on what ‘Healthy’ means to Room 1:

  • Fit
  • Energised (Aziza)
  • Active (Amy V)
  • Never giving up (Louis)
  • Exercise (Ashlee)
  • Eating vegetables (Ishan)
  • Less Junk food (Aziza)
  • Energy (Francis)
  • More strength
  • Happiness (Francis)
  • Not stressed (Alex)
  • Calm (Jackson)
  • Feeling good about ourselves

We also discussed the important role of food in being healthy and how food effects our overall well-being. Let’s watch the following video and discuss important nutrients found in the foods we eat:

Here are some great healthy choices Room 1 have selected for their lunchboxes! Clever cats even made sure they selected something from each food group!

Dealing with change and problems

Roads and Roundabouts

What is a problem?

  • Ideas (Francis)
  • Something you can’t solve but you need help with (Oscar)
  • People feeling not well (TJ)
  • Something that doesn’t make you feel very good (Louis)
  • You can ask for help with a problem (Jamie)
  • When you feel unsafe or in danger (Amy V)

We are introducing the ‘Roads and Roundabouts’ model for problem solving. What do we know about roundabouts? You can go around and around, trying to work  out which is the right road to take.

Here’s Mr Bean attempting to solve his own problem….

What do we know? Each option is a different road that leads to a different destination.

Help me use the ‘Roads and Roundabout’ model to help me solve my problem-What game should I play during lunchtime?

Here are a list of problems Room 1 sometimes faces:

  • what should I have for lunch?
  • what game should I play?
  • who should I play with outside?
  • which friend should i play with?

How can I use the ‘Roads and Roundabouts’ model to help solve my problem?

  • It gives me more than one option
  • It helps me decide on what the best option for my problem is

Cyber Safety

Room 1 had a productive lesson on how to communicate respectfully via the internet. Here are some great ideas on how to be respectful when communicating with others on the internet!

  • using initiative by helping a victim of bullying (Kuini)
  • put yourself in someone else’s shoes (Amy)
  • appropriate language (Vanessa)
  • considerate of other’s feelings (Ms Kondoska)
  • asking for help (Abitha)
  • avoid excessive social network usage (Henry)
  • Be kind and polite (Room 1)
  • encourage others to stop bullying
  • STOP Bullying!

Great work Room 1!

Our Environment and Living Things

Room 1 had a great lesson on how living things depend on each other and the environment to survive. We brainstormed ideas for the question How do you think humans can have an impact on the environment and other living things? and came up with some great ideas! Check them out:

  • air/water pollution
  • littering
  • animal cruelty-hunting/endangered species
  • man-made structures-buildings, cities
  • global warming
  • cutting down trees for personal use/destroying habitats

Reading ‘The Lorax’ by Dr Seuss gave Room 1 even more ideas! So we decided to create our own ‘Lorax’ with each student pledging to help keep the Earth safe and clean.

Listening!

Today room 1 looked at what listening looks like and sounds like. Some ideas are:

Looks Like:

Eyes on speaker

Hands in our lap

Legs Crossed

Hands raised when you need to speak or ask a question

The ‘Give me Five’

Sounds Like:

one voice at a time

no calling out

inside voices

appropriate language like ‘thank you’ and ‘please’

no talking over the speaker

Students modeled listening skills by having a friend describe an image and then drawing what they heard from their friend. Here’s evidence of some great listening skills:

‘It has a long tail, two flapping wings. two beady eyes and a curved body’ What am I? (Kuini)

Think before you share!

Today we are learning about being safe on the internet and why it’s important to think carefully before we post anything online.

This will help us know what is OK to post on our classroom blogs, chat in online games and other social media. It will also help us to know what is NOT OK post.

Now we will watch the video again and take some notes to help us remember what important information it told us.

Here us some interesting thoughts on how to be safe online:

  • Parent supervision- tell a parent if you see or read something that makes you sad or unhappy. (Kuini)
  • Do not share personal information (Aziza)
  • Be careful about what you share and post online (Miss K)
  • With great power comes great responsibility (Vanessa)
  • Keep your privacy settings as high as possible
  • Never give out your passwords
  • Not everyone online is who they say they are.
  • Negativity leads to chaos-cyber bulling can leave scars (Henry)
  • Not everything on the internet is TRUE!

Gardening Time!

For the past few weeks Room 1 have been working really hard to take care of their plants. They planted a broad bean seed with care and everyday make sure they are watered so that photosynthesis can take place. Everyday is an exciting new discovery as students measure their plants to observe and investigate their own plants progress. It’s a race to see who’s plant grows the highest or who’s plant produces the first broad bean. Hmmm….I wonder who will win…Viti or Aaron? Stay tuned…..

Day 1….It all begins…..

Day 18….Look how much they’ve grown!

Inquiry “Living Things”

In Inquiry today, Room 1 talked all things”Habitat”. Their thinking and much, much note taking led to a clear definition:

“A habitat is a place where plants and animals live” however…..it did not end there. The awesomeness that is Room 1 shared even more information:

” A habitat is where a living thing finds the food, water and shelter it needs to live in comfortably”We also explored the many different habitats that exist in our world, like “Desert”, “Rain forests”, “Grasslands”, “Marine” and “Polar.” Here’s proof of awesome learning in Room 1:
